Introduction
Benin, city, Nigeria
Situated in South Nigeria, Benin is a port city on the Benin River. The University of Benin and Benson Idahosa University are situated in the city. Benin is the centre of Nigeria’s rubber industry. Palm nuts and timber are produced nearby and processed in Benin. Furniture and carpets are also made. The city has a glorious history of ethnic craftsmanship. The portrait figures, busts, and groups created in iron, carved ivory, and brass (long thought to be bronze) made in Benin beginning perhaps as early as the 13th century, rank with the finest art of Africa. Cire perdue casting is still practiced there. Examples of Benin art are displayed in museums in the city. The "Benin Bronzes": portrait figures, busts, and groups created in iron, carved ivory, and especially in brass (conventionally called "bronze") made in Benin are displayed in museums around the world.
